Thursday was a good day to come in if you wanted to work on your lunges and give to a great cause. So many of you came out to support the Lunges for Laila event and we want to thank all of you for sacrificing your glutes, quads and hamstrings for such a special fundraiser.
This was the second year Sandia held Lunges for Laila and everyone who participated at Sandia really cranked out those lunges, helping us raise close to $1,500!
Sandia CrossFit members Tina Arce and Sachi Biggs started Lunges for Laila in honor of Tina's daughter who has been battling cancer since she was three and a half. Laila just turned six on Valentine's Day and was all smiles at the event yesterday watching all of you do your lunges.
"So far she is doing excellent and doing great off the chemo," said Tina. "It's a long road and we're just hoping that she stays cancer free. The reason we do Lunges for Laila is so we can give back to the UNM Children's Hospital. We spent over three months at the hospital during her first year of treatment. We basically lived at the hospital so we want to give back to the kids there and the hospital facility."
You can learn more about Laila's story by going to the Facebook page Prayers for Laila.
We also want to give a shoutout to the UNM Women's Rugby Team and other CrossFit boxes in the area that participated. This was the first year other boxes got involved and we hope the event continues to grow for next year. Thanks everyone!
The first wave of boot campers started this past week at Sandia CrossFit and there were a lot of you. It just goes to show how many of you are ready to take on 2014 in a healthy way!
It’s never easy getting started on a workout program especially if you’ve been out of the exercising loop for a while.
Sleeping in, watching tv, taking a nap – all of those just sound so much better sometimes. But, three days out of this week, many of you battled the call of the couch to spend an hour with us for the Sandia CrossFit Six-Week Boot Camp.
We applaud you guys for committing to this first week. Yes, it was only the first week, but that’s a huge step. Soon it will be Week Six and you’ll look back amazed with how quickly it went.
We bet you’ll feel stronger, too, and ready to take on regular CrossFit classes.
Our bootcamp advice for these next five weeks: Keep at it, stay strong, don’t be afraid to ask our trainers questions, meet new people, get sweaty, and have fun!
Great Scott, the website has undergone it's annual facelift! With that, it's time to announce the scheduled goings-on for the upcoming year. First, our epic 6-week bootcamp is returning with a passion! If you've been redirected here from Groupon make sure you check out the link to information on registering for a bootcamp class or what it's all about here.
Also, we have several amazing events going on in the first half of the year. We have another level 1 course coming in February and an Olympic Weightlifting seminar coming in May!
Lastly, we have our derelict kids program making a resurgence this year, beginning sometime in the summer - oh boy!
As an added bonus, we're selling super trendy hoodies now too! Can it get any better? I think not.
Check back often as we will continue to update the site and announce fun new events.
Oi team! It's been a long time since we had a breather to write much for our sorry little site but here it is: an update on where we've come and where we're headed! Obviously the coolest thing to happen to our little fitness center is the drastic upgrade in facility. Our move from the shanty-tastic, hobo-attracting, hole ridden slum we called home into an epic 9600sqft WOD paradise has given us a new lease on awesomeness. We have showers, a ginormous pullup rig, and thousands of feet to do running workouts. Even better - air conditioning and heaters... crazy! The bootcamps have netted a whole gang of new friends and competitors and every day a few more people get turned into SCF zealots. With the influx of new people we've invested in new toys - tons of different bars, weights, med balls, kettlebells, jump ropes, sleds, climbing ropes, and tires. Classes have been added to accommodate weirdo schedules - we've popped in new Saturday classes, a 5:30am class, and a Sunday open gym. We now have Des Evans doing chilcare to help parents wanting to compete on a WOD and Blooming Sprout Yoga is doing awesome kids yoga to keep the little tykes in shape (and prepare them for the rigors of CrossFit. Tom Rader has introduced a ruck-based, military style endurance class. Stacy Black continues her tear-inducing mobility and Cammy Wade, despite carrying an extra human being with her wherever she goes, is still getting the downest dog ever on Friday nights. Jeff Hart is still getting up at ridiculous hours to bring you CrossFit early and Mike Deyhle still pops in to answer obscure physiology questions. Also, we've recently welcomed the legendary Ayla Steadman into our staff and as of this week she begins making you guys miserable completely on her own. Audrey Johnson has taken up a lot of our essential art tasks and has started a sweet paleo blog from our site helping us all stick with the challenge going on. We've been able to reach out into the community as well - last week we hosted the UNM Student Nursing Association's CrossFit fundraiser and several weeks ago the gym had a tremendous showing and was able to raise $2000 for the UNM Children's Hospital during the epic "Lunges for Laila" workout. A few months before that we supported the GORUCK and it's awesome effort to raise funds for the Green Beret Foundation. As far as us, Matt (me) finishes school for the summer and will be around annoyingly often. Zach is still conducting research into "cotton impingement" - it is leading to some exciting data. Blue continues to sniff things.
We've got a whole lot of fun ideas for the future. Hopefully the bootcamp will be annual - with the first few months of the year dedicated to them as a way to get our families and friends involved with CrossFit in a nice orderly way. When the bootcamps aren't in session we'll probably organize a skill-building "on-ramp" program to make sure people can tackle the toughest skills their first day in. On the other side of the spectrum, we'll be assembling a competition team soon for those who want to start training towards a more aggressive goal and enter the CrossFit arena proper. To support that, and general team spirit, we'll be buying up apparel so you guys can sport our colors out and about in a slew of awesome ways. We're still coming up with grips of designs including reprints of the old dinosaw shirts. In addition to competition we're also looking towards jumping into the kid's programs again and beginning a senior's program designed to use CrossFit to maintain and increase mobility, strength, and independence. We still have more matting, equipment, and, let's face it, toys to buy so be prepared to see an "improve your gym day" pop up once every couple of months. We've entertained ideas of international trips, big parties, more yoga, and tons of random other fun events - that we haven't shelved but haven't had time to get going. Long story short, there's about a million and a half reasons to get pumped up for the rest of the year.
Ideally I'd love to throw in a section about our members who are doing epic things right now as well, but truth be told there is no room for that here - nearly all of our athletes are out there completing feats of awesomeness and to highlight a few would mean neglecting dozens of other stories. Hopefully we'll begin adding individual Sandianite profiles to our site in the near future.
Long story short: things are rockin here and it's all because of your grand bad-assery. Carry on.
